Why Visit the Enfield Shaker Museum?

New Hampshire’s Lakes Region offers more than days on the water and mountain views. Travelers interested in local history can also discover places that tell the story of the people and communities that shaped the state.

The Enfield Shaker Museum is one of those destinations. Located in Enfield near Mascoma Lake, this outdoor history museum preserves an important Shaker village and gives visitors the chance to explore historic architecture, collections, gardens, and educational programs.

It can make a rewarding day trip when staying in our Lakes Region rentals.

About the Museum

The Enfield Shaker Village was founded in 1793 as the ninth Shaker community established in the United States. At its peak around 1850, more than 300 Shakers lived, worked, and worshiped here. The community eventually constructed more than 100 buildings and farmed thousands of acres.

Today, the Enfield Shaker Museum works to preserve this history. The museum has operated since 1986 and cares for historic Shaker buildings, cemeteries, gardens, artifacts, and the outdoor worship area known as the Feast Ground.

Explore Historic Buildings

Architecture is one of the biggest reasons to visit. The museum’s centerpiece is the Great Stone Dwelling, constructed between 1837 and 1841. It was designed by architect Ammi Burnham Young and is the largest Shaker dwelling ever built.

Inside, visitors can see features designed around communal Shaker life, including built-in drawers and cupboards, peg rails, separate entrances and staircases, and numerous windows. Guided tours of the Great Stone Dwelling are offered during the museum’s regular season and are included with admission.

For guests searching for things to do in NH Lakes Region, the museum provides a chance to experience New Hampshire history.

View the Museum Collections & Exhibits

The museum holds the nation’s largest collection of Enfield Shaker material culture. Exhibits use objects such as furniture, clothing, tools, and historic photographs to explain how community members lived and worked.

These objects help turn a broad history lesson into something more personal. Visitors can learn about Shaker craftsmanship, daily routines, beliefs, education, agriculture, and the values that influenced their community.

Stroll the Museum Garden

Make time for the Shaker Herb Garden during your visit. The museum maintains herb and community gardens as part of the historic site, giving guests another way to learn about the practical skills that supported Shaker life.

Garden tours are also offered on select days during the museum season. Depending on your visit, you may be able to join a guided walk that explores the plants and traditions connected with the garden.

Attend Events & Workshops

The museum calendar adds even more reasons to return. Programming changes throughout the year and can include traditional craft workshops, guided hikes, concerts, garden tours, seasonal celebrations, and educational programs.

For example, the 2026 Shaker Harvest Festival includes wagon rides, cider pressing, butter churning, traditional craft demonstrations, live music, museum tours, and garden activities. Check the museum’s current calendar before your trip to see what is scheduled during your stay.

Final Thoughts

The Enfield Shaker Museum is worth visiting if you enjoy history, architecture, traditional craftsmanship, gardens, or quieter cultural attractions. Instead of simply reading about the Shakers, you can walk through buildings they used and explore the landscape where their community developed.

It is an especially good addition to a Lakes Region itinerary when you want a break from boating, hiking, and other outdoor adventures.
