About Lake Winnisquam

This lake is a top local spot for Lakes Region NH outdoor winter activities, not to mention simple summer marina excursions.

This 10.5-mile lake is perfect for families who enjoy walking, boating, fishing, and more.

Lake Winnisquam gets most of its water from the nearby Lake Winnipesaukee, offering a slightly smaller and calmer place to hang out.

Lake Winnisquam History

The area we know of today as the Abenaki first occupied Lake Winnisquam until the 18th century when colonists later came by boat and claimed the territory. It’s been split into two separate basins since then and has undergone countless other establishment deeds of ownership. Currently, it’s managed by the Lakes Region Clean Waters Association.

Public Beaches

Let’s talk about the beaches you can enjoy during your getaway, starting with Bartlett Beach in nearby Laconia. Accessible from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, this destination offers a fun playground, plenty of opportunities for swimming and fishing, and no entry fees. You shouldn’t miss Bond Beach Park, right in Laconia as well. It’s one of New Hampshire’s cleanest beaches, with the most crystal-clear water. It has a more extensive playground, restrooms, and even a concession stand!

You can also visit Waukewan Beach in Meredith (hours varying per season), Sanbornton Town Beach in Sanbornton (varied hours and seasonal openings), and the Leslie E. Roberts Beach & Recreation Area in Belmont (open from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, but 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every other day) and Weirs Beach in Laconia (hours and seasons varying).

Nearby Towns

In addition to the beaches, you might also be interested in the nearby towns you can visit. Meredith has around 6,000 people ready to welcome you to the area. If you prefer a small town that feels more like a city, then you might opt for exploring Meredith. It has the most shops, sculpture walks, eateries, and fairs.

Many other local towns with a slight, family feel are just within reach here, too, several offering distinctive Lakes Region breweries and wineries where you can relax and unwind, like Laconia (population 6,000), Sanbornton (population 2,500), Belmont (population 7,300) and Tilton (population nearly 4,000).

Belton, Tilton, and Laconia are on the waterfront, while Sanbornton and Meredith are on the lakefronts. You’ll find Sanbornton on the west shoreline, close to Laconia Road Route 3. If you like catching each new sunrise, this is the place to be! Sanbornton’s got the best all-around mountain views, as well.
