Lake Waukewan History

To understand the history of Lake Waukewan, we have to first understand the history of the nearby town of Meredith. Meredith was officially settled in 1766 and quickly became known for its crop production, bringing produce like corn, wheat, potatoes, and apples. Lake Waukewan allowed the residents to construct water power sites, eventually allowing them to expand the town and start a sawmill, blacksmith shop, tannery, and more.

Today, Lake Waukewan is still a vital water source for the people of Meredith, and a watershed restoration plan for the lake (and nearby Lake Winona) is currently in place.

You can take advantage of the convenient showers and restrooms as well as the public boat launch within walking distance of the beach. You might also hear this beach called Meredith Town Beach or Lake Waukewan Town Beach.
